Absinthe The Green Fairy
By Ryan Murphy
Absinthe: The Green Fairy Typically served with ice cold water. I have tried it with and without the water, some of the smoother ones are ok without it, the stronger ones will kick you like a mule if you don't add it. Another reason to use the water is that it brings out more flavors in the liquor. Its not a macho thing, it just tastes better when you use the water and add sugar to sweeten it. The best way to serve it is to find a glass with a reservoir at the bottom, one that holds about a shot and a half is good. Use that to measure the absinthe. Then add the water. There is a bit of a ritual to it. You get a nice open glass, pour a shot or half shot into the glass. Then place the spoon on the rim (absinthe spoons are made to rest properly on the glass) and put a sugar cube on the spoon. Pour ice cold water over the cube till the cup is mostly full. Drop the rest of the cube into the water then stir it up and enjoy. While the water mixes with the absinthe it turns a milky color. That is normal. The absinthe reacts to the water which brings out the herbal notes of the drink. This also dilutes the drink from hangover in ten minute strength, to wine strength. The sugar sweetens the drink and also helps bring out flavors. It also makes a very good mixer, try it with lemon lime soda Absinthe has been made into a villein for a long time. They say it will drive you mad, what they don't say here is that much like the tobacco companies using scare tactics to keep Weed illegal, the wine companies did the same thing with absinthe. The acts supposedly carried out under the influence of the drink can easily, and more clinically be attributed to alcoholism and syphilis. It was a period when the grape farms were taking heavy losses, and the wineries were at low production when absinthe became popular. When the grapes, and wine returned, the wineries decided to get rid of the competition. So they took advantage of a few cases and created sensationalized stories to induce a public outcry. Much like reefer madness, and all the horror stories about hallucinogenics you see on the news do. The simple truth is they don't want competition, the wineries didn't then, the drug companies and tobacco companies don't now. Absinthe has a drunk you cant get any other way. Ultimately its like any other unique drink. All types of alcohol give you a different feeling of drunk. Absinthe just has a really cool feel to it. Plus its mighty tasty. Its a really weird kind of drunk, its possible that some of the more creative types drinking it were experiencing unrestrained creativity while on it, Ive had some cool ideas just float through my head while drinking it. The affects I have had are like being drunk, but still able to think clearly. It seems to increase your control over certain areas of your mind, while still letting you loosen up. As both an artist and a practitioner of Magick it is unbelievable. I recommend the Mini package for your first time. If you can afford it go with the Zèle Premium. I also recommend the absinthe 35. That is my fav. The zele will knock you on your butt if you aren’t ready for it( i was not). The 35 has a much smoother finish. On the other hand the Zele gets you cruising faster. The mini’s are about two small shots each. The 35 and zele are in the 140/151proof range so you wont need much to get a buzz. If you want something smoother, the lisse is only 60 proof and has a nice light flavor. For 199$ you can pick up a bottle of King of Absinthe Platinum. This is the stuff Johnny Depp and M Manson get. I have not tried it yet. I also would not recommend spending that much for your first bottle. Try out a Mini’s collection or get a bottle of 35 first. If you are of drinking age and have never tried Absinthe check it out. I love this stuff! It wont make you hallucinate or anything but it will give you one of the weirdest drunks you will ever have. Trust me. I got some for Halloween last year for a party and we got wasted good on it. If you’ve ever had chartreuse it is similar. Don't go for legal knockoffs, this stuff is primo. |
